Tackling Childhood Obesity in the Schools...

I was cruising around the Internet and found this interesting story about how a county in England is looking to start screening kids for obesity in the public schools.

This mirrors other calls to action here in the states, where advocates are recommending that kids be weighed, measured, and assigned a body mass index value which would be reported back to the parents, along with guidance.

What do you think about this? Would this kind of measure be helpful for parents and kids, or offensive?

Give me your opinion, and I'll give you mine...

While I understand clearly that being overweight causes a host of other problems ... and that children are really at the mercy of their parents when it comes to developing good eating habits for a healthy life ...

... I have to say that there's almost no way to deal with this outside of discussing it with your own patients (or parents) ... and like with any other medical problem, hope they comply and trade any unhealthy lifestyles for healthier ones.

You really can't have the government roll out dietary nazis who'll invade people's homes and check what's cooking, and count how many sodas Johnny had today ...

And if the government did do that, then what's stopping them from invading our privacy in other ways?

... you watch too much television

... you're not allowed that beer until the week end

... you can't golf until you've put in your quota of charity work

... and heaven only knows what else ...

Yes, we have a lot of fat people - but it's still none of Big Brother's business. The government does not belong in our fridges, or at our supper tables ... any more than they belong in our bedrooms.

I agree that the government should stay clear of governing our eating habits and stay out of your school, yet this obesity crisis need to be addressed more seriously in the US. I truly believe combatting adolescent obesity is a collaborative effort and a plan needs to be set forth among families with overweight kids. Check out www.teentalkblog.tv
